        <![CDATA[<p>Just a quick post here to follow up on Ann's photo post:</p>

<p>Here's a good one of Cole singing Puff the Magic Dragon. It's a lot less sad than the PP&M version, if you ask me -- which is good, because that song is seriously depressing.</p><p></p>

<div id="cole_puff_container"><a href="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplay
er">Get the Flash Player</a> to see this video.</div>

<p></p>

<p>And here's a nice vid of Tess in tummy time, showing off some of her spoken and body language skills.</p>

<div id="tess_tt_container"><a href="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplay
er">Get the Flash Player</a> to see this video.</div>

<script type="text/javascript">
 var s_cole_puff = new SWFObject("/david/vids/mediaplayer.swf","cole_puff_mediaplayer","640","360","8");
 s_cole_puff.addParam("allowfullscreen","true");
 s_cole_puff.addVariable("width","640");
 s_cole_puff.addVariable("height","360");
 s_cole_puff.addVariable("image","/david/vids/cole_puff.flv.jpg");
 s_cole_puff.addVariable("file","/david/vids/cole_puff.flv");
 s_cole_puff.write("cole_puff_container");

 var s_tess_tt = new SWFObject("/david/vids/mediaplayer.swf","tess_tummytime_mediaplayer","640","360","8");
 s_tess_tt.addParam("allowfullscreen","true");
 s_tess_tt.addVariable("width","640");
 s_tess_tt.addVariable("height","360");
 s_tess_tt.addVariable("image","/david/vids/tess_tummytime_babble.flv.jpg");
 s_tess_tt.addVariable("file","/david/vids/tess_tummytime_babble.flv");
 s_tess_tt.write("tess_tt_container");

</script>

<p><p>Posting videos to this blog is unnecessarily difficult. I'm trying to figure out a better way, so that we can post more without it being a project each time. If anyone is an expert on this, please do lend some advice. Currently, I convert from .MOV or .AVI to .flv. I also extract a .jpg from the .flv. Then I upload the files separately. Then, I write some html+javascriptto containerize a flash media player and load the .flv and .jpg. There has got to be an easier way, right? Help</p>.</p>

Given the proper clothing and Tess's willingness to nap at the appointed hour, we actually had a pretty good time during our Easter Egg Hunt out back. &nbsp;Here, Cole admires and early find.</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="2011_easter_1.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/2011_easter_1.JPG" width="430" height="323" class="mt-image-none" style="" /></div></div><div><br /></div><div>And here, Cole, in froggie hat and galoshes, displays "monster face" while holding his Easter basket. &nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="2011_easter_2.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/2011_easter_2.JPG" width="430" height="573" class="mt-image-none" style="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>After all of my complaining about cold, wet weather...we experienced about five consecutive days of sun with temperatures above 70...a rarity for Berkeley. &nbsp;Even more surprising is that two of these days happened on a weekend. &nbsp;We decided to take advantage by heading to the beach. &nbsp;We spent the night in Tomales Bay with friends Lisa and John. &nbsp;They welcomed us late on Saturday night (we arrived just before 10PM) with freshly roasted artichokes and the perfect nighttime set up for parents with small children. &nbsp;The next morning was John's birthday. &nbsp;Lisa and John cooked a lovely breakfast, and we ate at leisure while Cole ran around on their sizable property playing with Sheba, the dog. &nbsp;It was so nice to be in a place where Cole could roam with only occasional parental attention. &nbsp;After that, we all headed to Dillon Beach for some fun in the sun. &nbsp;It was nearly impossible to get Cole to look up for a picture, but here are a few images of our day at the beach. &nbsp;David's left foot makes it into this shot of Cole digging a trench.</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="2011_beachcole.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/2011_beachcole.JPG" width="430" height="323" class="mt-image-none" style="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Tess's visit to the beach was less eventful than Cole's. &nbsp;She was asleep most of the time, and almost entirely covered up by her perhaps overly protective mama. &nbsp;I, in a very closing-the-door-after-the-horse-has-left-the-barn move, am slathered in high spf sunscreen.</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="2011_dillonMomTess1.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/2011_dillonMomTess1.JPG" width="430" height="573" class="mt-image-none" style="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>A good time without sunburn was had by all. &nbsp;Big thanks you to Lisa and John!</div><div><br /></div><div>Next up, a relaxing Mother's Day with a picnic in the backyard. &nbsp;Cole was not excited about sitting still or looking at the camera, so we have more pictures of Tess this day than Cole. &nbsp;David, who spends most of his time behind the lens, gets out in front for this one.</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="2011_anndave_mothersday.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/2011_anndave_mothersday.JPG" width="430" height="323" class="mt-image-none" style="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>David saved this one in B&amp;W to give it that picture-that-comes-in-a-new-picture-frame look.</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="2011_moday_tess_2.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/2011_moday_tess_2.JPG" width="430" height="287" class="mt-image-none" style="" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Finally, here is one with the whole brood:</div><div><br /></div><div><img alt="2011_moday_kids.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/2011_moday_kids.JPG" width="430" height="645" class="mt-image-none" style="" /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>As always, there is a <a href="http://www.kellobowitz.net/david/pics/kgall.php?folder=apr2011">gallery </a>with more pictures and full-resolution versions of these.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></div>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p><div><br /></div><div>It's a little embarrassing, but our last blog entry was for Cole's 2nd birthday. It's now five months later and we've been Internet silent for that entire time! Whoops.</div><div><br /></div><div>Short story is that we've been really busy and generally exhausted most of the time. Ann is running at high revs to make herself as tenure-friendly as possible (not to mention working hard to grow her latest Project). I've been working hard at "The Big G," and spending lots of time on the bus. Cole has been generally rolling along, saying and doing lots of cute things. He's starting to get the hang of the potty, and he's even enrolled in his first soccer class. He's also getting up a lot more at night -- see exhaustion above.</div><div><br /></div><div>Overall, it's life. Hardly newsworthy. Once a few months have passed, the pressure to make a really good blog entry increases, so you put it off even longer. Well, here I am to break the cycle, with a more or less content-free blog post.</div><div><br /></div><div>Cue the cute videos:</div><div><br /></div></p>

        <![CDATA[School started over a month ago, but since the warmest time of year in Berkeley is September, we've been acting like it's still summer time.&nbsp; Our big news is that Cole seems to have shifted to one nap a day.&nbsp; This gives us three uninterrupted hours to do things like blog entries, laundry, &amp; dinner prep.&nbsp; We are in the early stages of one of those naps, hence the new blog entry.&nbsp; Most of the pictures are from our afternoon at the Berkeley Marina on a particularly hot day.&nbsp; It was also nearly naptime,so David got a few pensive shots.<br /><img alt="sandtoes.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/sandtoes.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="480" height="320" />&nbsp; <div><img alt="beachstroll.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/beachstroll.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="480" height="720" /></div><div><img alt="seriousbeach.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/seriousbeach.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="480" height="320" /></div><div><br />David did a great job getting a series of pictures of me and Cole swinging.&nbsp; In the one I include here, Cole looks nonplussed.&nbsp; In reality, every time I tried to stop swinging, he would sign for more.<br /><br /><img alt="sumswing.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/sumswing.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="480" height="720" /><br /><br />David got more smiles than I did, and I was lucky enough to catch them both.&nbsp; Although it's pretty evident when one compares my pictures to David's who the real artiste in the family is.<br /><a href="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/morelikeit.JPG"><img alt="morelikeit.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/assets_c/2009/10/morelikeit-thumb-430x286-144.jpg" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="430" height="286" /></a><br /><br />It turns out that Cole loves balloons and doesn't understand that some balloons aren't intended for him.&nbsp; We try to indulge him in this and yet not intrude too much on others' birthdays, wedding celebrations, etc.&nbsp; But here is Cole reaching for a colorful set of balloons.&nbsp; <br /><img alt="boomboo.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/boomboo.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="480" height="320" /><br /><br />When Cole saw this picture on the computer, he said "boomboo, boomboo!"&nbsp; So, now we know his word for balloons, too.<br /><br />More recently, David made a solid attempt at introducing Cole to tether ball and the nearby school yard.&nbsp; <br /><br /><img alt="tetherball.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/tetherball.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="480" height="360" /><br /></div><div><br />And just to prove that I can get both David and Cole in the frame, here's another from the same day (only have to work on focus, now).<br /><br /><img alt="washschool.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/washschool.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="480" height="640" /><br /></div><div><br /></div>]]>

<p class="MsoNormal">It's been a busy summer.<span style="">&nbsp;
</span>Cole is in that phase where it seems like he does something new every
week if not every day.<span style="">&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>We have tried to
capture some of it on film, but Cole's camera-acquisition mode makes it difficult.&nbsp; So, this entry is going to be words and stills (sorry grandparents).</p><p class="MsoNormal">Here's a cute picture of Cole sticking out his tongue and looking happy (he had just eaten a tomato from our neighbor's garden which is pretty evident in the photo):</p><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Cole_tongue.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/Cole_tongue.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="430" height="287" /></span><p class="MsoNormal"></p><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal">So here's me beaming at Cole in response to some crazy, mama-killing act of cuteness:</p><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Beaming_mama.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/Beaming_mama.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="430" height="287" /></span><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal">Cole has done several things these past few months that make
me crazy with love.<span style="">&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>Just after his
first birthday when Cole picked up a book, I said to him<span style=""></span>, "Cole, do you want to sit in mama's lap so I can read to you?"<span style="">&nbsp; He thought for a minute, </span>turned around, stuck out
his little baby butt, and started to back up towards me.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>I'm not sure why that made me so happy.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>The fact that he understood what I was
saying?<span style="">&nbsp; </span>His tremendous coordination as
he walked backwards with his little tush sticking out?<span style="">&nbsp; </span>But it was definitely heart-warming.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>Now he will do that to anyone who sits still
long enough in our house.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>And he doesn't
just take random books off the shelf.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>He
already has his favorites.<span style="">&nbsp; </span><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal">Another sweet development is how Cole now calls us "mama?" and "daddy?"<span style="">&nbsp; He is very deliberate and</span> and refers to us with a rising tone that makes it sound like a question.&nbsp; Like he wants to make sure we know who we are.&nbsp; So far, he's getting a pretty positive response.<br /></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Another mama-pleaser is Cole's habit of walking around around on his tippy toes.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>Not really sure where he learned that, but it's clear he likes all the ways his feet work (walking, running, dancing, and tippy
toes).<span style="">&nbsp; </span>As far as dancing goes, he has two modes: (a) drumming his feet on the ground really quickly like Flash Dance and
(b) doing the fairly common baby bounce where he bends his knees in time with the
music.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>I've also been trying to teach
him to jump, which brings huge smiles and more tippy toes.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>He has yet to leave terra firma on his own,
but we're working on it.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Oh, and Cole will climb anything.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>We are trying to encourage his climbing
instincts since he is the child of rock/mountain climbers.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>But we're also trying to set some
limits.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>No climbing on tables.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>He's not yet convinced.<span style="">&nbsp; </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">While my dad and Yvonne were visiting, we went for a walk in
Tilden.&nbsp; Cole surprised us by hiking for a quarter mile on his
own.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>Here's a picture of him enjoying
his mobility.</p>

<span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="happy_hiker.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/happy_hiker.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="430" height="645" /></span>

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The last super-sweet Cole thing came from our nanny who
reported that Cole was being pushed around by a sullen loaner on the playground who wouldn't let any other kids near him and was generally boorish.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>Apparently, after one shove, Cole looked
sad...like he might cry.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>But then Cole got
an idea.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>He picked up his sippy-cup and
handed it to the mean kid.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>The mean kid
took a sip, smiled, and handed it back.<span style="">&nbsp;
</span>Then Cole took a sip.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>After that,
the nanny said that "mean kid" turned into a total sweetheart.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>He gave Cole a hug and kiss and then started
following him all around the playground laughing and playing.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>She said the "mean" kid was completely
transformed.<span style="">&nbsp;&nbsp; </span>The Obama Administration
has already called to see if he'll lend his services in their continuing
efforts with Iran.<span style="">&nbsp; </span>We said we'd consider
it once Cole learns to keep the bowl of the spoon right-side-up while eating.</p><p class="MsoNormal">Since David is the photographer in the family, there aren't that many pictures that include him.&nbsp; Here is a recent family portrait taken by Myron in July:<br /></p><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="fam_port.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/fam_port.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="430" height="287" /></span><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">And, speaking of David's photography skills, here are two of my recent favorites:</p>

<span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="goinferaride.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/goinferaride.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="430" height="287" /></span>

<p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline;"><img alt="Morning_light.JPG" src="http://www.kellobowitz.net/blog/pics/Morning_light.JPG" class="mt-image-none" style="" width="430" height="645" /></span>

        <![CDATA[It's all too obvious now that this blog has been neglected of late. We're guilty, but in our defense, we've been busy. Ann is working lots of research and publications, and daddy is putting in the long hours at PGE. The remainder of our time has been spent playing with Cole, eating, and occasionally sleeping.<br /><br />We still take pictures, of course.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.kellobowitz.net/david/pics/kgall.php?folder=memday09">Here are some from Memorial Day.</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.kellobowitz.net/david/pics/kgall.php?folder=maya1st&amp;pic=5">Here are some from Maya's (Coles nanny-mate's) first Birthday.</a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.kellobowitz.net/david/pics/kgall.php?folder=therese4jul">Here are some from a Fourth of July visit with Terese, Ann's friend from kindergarten on.</a><br /><br />and finally, <a href="http://www.kellobowitz.net/david/pics/kgall.php?folder=sunolcamping">here are some from Cole's first ever camping trip</a>, a car camping expedition at Sunol park.<br /><br />Now, you might notice there is a distinct lack of video in this entry. We've got some, and I'll try to post it "soon," but it's a bit more work to get up, so please sit tight.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />]]>
