Growing into New Stuff

Cole is only six weeks old, but he's becoming a big boy. He's already won't fit in the "zero to three months" infant clothes. Here he is, in a new "three to six month" onesy, courtesy of his Aunt Suzette:

In fact, Cole has been getting lots of gifts from friends and family. We've been promising to provide people with photos of Cole in all his new stuff, but that's going to be a long project. For our first entry, here's Cole's lovely new blanket from Mickey and Werner:

Cole has a cold

I have been a shadow figure on the blog for a number of weeks now.  Suffice it to say that Cole does a lot of nursing and there is less down time than I imagined.  This week, however, Cole and I started to hit a groove where he was in great spirits, and I felt the most rested I've felt since I went into labor on May 16th.  This led to several outings.  Cole and I hung out at Cafe Trieste on Monday AM while I got my oil changed.  That afternoon, we went to see our friends whom we met in childbirth prep class — Kristy and Katie.  On Tuesday, we ran an errand to Baby's R Us where another mom commented that I was brave to be out with my little one (her 10 wk old daughter was a home with her dad).  On Wednesday, Cole and I went to work for some introductions and then visited Susanna for lunch.

Then, just when it seemed that everything was on the up and up, Cole developed a cold.  There was a lot of coughing this morning, a phone call to the advice nurse, time spent in the bathroom with the shower on, and a purchase of a humidifier.  We are watching out for signs of the cold turning into something worse than a cold.  But for the time being, I guess Cole just has to tough it out.  Ben (friend, neighbor, landlord) offered that their son Marlow had his first cold when he was six days old. Granted, Marlow got his cold from his older brother, not from a trip to Cafe Trieste or Baby's R Us.  But hearing about Marlow's experience reassures me that even small babies do get colds and do get over them.

Of course, this blog entry would be incomplete without mentioning that, in spite of being sick, Cole is still delighting me with smiles and happy coos [see video].

Need... more... vids...

The grandparents, sweet as they are, continue to demand more video. In all honesty, nothing monumental has transpired since the last videos, but we're still happy to oblige. You'll be familiar with the venue for both these scenes: Cole's changing table -- a place which apparently has become his favorite in the world. I wonder if how much he likes diaper changes will delay his potty training.

Anyway...

Tummy Tickles

I do want to take credit for being the first to successfully belly-tickle Cole. I also can lay claim to the first tummy boodle/raspberry.

First bottle

Mommy has been feeding Cole the 100% natural way so far, but that means that she bears the whole burden of waking in the night to feed him. Yesterday, we tried for the first time to have Daddy give Cole some pumped milk. The result was a mixed success. On the plus side, Cole had no trouble figuring out the bottle and drinking the milk. On the down side, he was not happy until he got some Mommy access anyway.

Smile or gas? You be the judge.

On several occasions, we have noticed that Cole seems to make a pretty happy face. Childcare books tell us not to expect smiles so soon, and that this is probably just gas. Going with the theory that Cole is very advanced for this age (four weeks today), we're on the side of smile. What do you think?

Splish Splash

So, it turns out bathing is not Cole's favorite activity. Until now, we've been sponging him down, as directed by our doctors, in order to protect his navel and circumcision wound. This is our first time, so maybe he'll learn to like bath time. He has certainly come around on diaper changes.
